Barcadia has become the second Kingston club to lose its licence in as many weeks.

The club had its licence revoked after an all-day hearing triggered by the glassing of a customer before Christmas.

Councillors made the decision after hearing from the bar's owners and Kingston police.

It is the second venue to lose its licence after Essence was closed following a 30 man brawl by the riverside, where scaffolding poles were used as weapons.

Earlier in the hearing James Rankin, representing Kingston police, said: “We don’t want these premises here anymore, because they are a drain on police resources.”

The “glassing” incident in December “would not have happened” if the club had abided by a condition on its licence not to serve drinks in glasses after midnight, he added.

He also compared Barcadia unfavourably with Oceana, now Pryzm, saying it had had more injuries by assault in recent months, despite its vastly smaller capacity.

Licensing officer PC Kevin Hyde told councillors: “I just don’t have confidence in the management and staff of Barcadia.”
