A mother will take in spectacular sights as she realises her life-long ambition of running across the Egyptian desert.

Janet Willicott, of Quinta Drive, High Barnet, is taking on the 160 mile challenge to raise money for the two causes that support her disabled son.

Charities Brainwave and Water for Kids have been "amazing" in helping ten-year-old Bastian to cope with his neurological problems.

She said: “Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve dreamt about doing this. It’s the ultimate challenge - if I can do this, I can do anything.

“The desert has a very hostile, peaceful, striking and unforgiving environment so I know it’s going to be tough.

“But the thought of my son is spurring me on - he’s the reason I’m doing this - he’s my drive.”

Ms Willicott, an events manager and part-time student, hopes to raise £3,000 to be divided between the two charities.

She will run 160 miles over 96 hours with the 50 other people on the trip, dubbed the Ocean Floor Marathon, organised by charity Fat Feet.

Although food will be provided, runners are responsible for finding a place to sleep each night.

Her epic marathon begins on March 23 and she has so far raised £60 for her trip.

She added: “It’s going to be a unique experience. I’ll be sleeping under the stars, which is going to be spectacular.

“We will be running around 43 miles a day but I’ve been practising very hard. I like to think of myself as fit.

“I’m very nervous, but also excited to see all the natural beauty in the desert. It will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”
