Family of traffic officer killed in hit-and-run set up charity fund in his memory

This Is Local London: PC Andrew Duncan PC Andrew Duncan

Friends and family of a policeman killed in a hit-and-run last year have set up a fund to help charities in his memory.

PC Andrew Duncan, from East Molesey, was knocked down by a car during a routine traffic operation in Reigate Avenue in Sutton in September and died in hospital days later.

Hundreds of people, including London Mayor Boris Johnson and Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Bernard Horgan-Howe attended the 47-year-old father-of-two's funeral in October.

Now, his sister Julia Williamson, father John Duncan and friend Fiona Axton have set up a fund in his memory to raise money charities that were close to PC Duncan's heart.

The funds organisers said: "Andrew lived near the River Thames in East Molesey all his life and was passionate about the water.

"As a fitting tribute we are currently establishing a river safety and awareness programme in the community in association with the Marine Policing Unit.

"We have chosen two police charities to support. The Traffic Patrol Orphans Club, a charity Andrew closely supported and Care of Police Survivors (COPS) a UK charity dedicated to helping the families of police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty, rebuild their lives."

A team of 20 of PC Duncan's friends, colleagues and family will be taking part in the Hampton Court Half Marathon to raise money for the fund on February 23.

Gary Bromige, also known as Gary Cody, of Holland Road in South Norwood admitted causing death by dangerous driving, causing death while uninsured, causing death while unlicensed, failing to stop at the scene of an accident and failing to report an accident at Kingston Crown Court in December.

He is due to be sentenced at the same court on February 7.
