People are being asked for their views on the proposed expansion of Darell Primary School.

Richmond Council wants to permanently expand the school from September to offer 60 children a place each year, compared with the current 43 pupils.

The proposal is part of the next stage of the council’s 10-year primary school expansion strategy that aims to meet the growing demand for school places in the borough.

If the expansion goes ahead it will bring to 27.5 the number of permanent additional forms of entry provided in the borough since 2000.

An extra permanent form of entry for 30 children was provided at Heathfield Infant School last year and Nelson Primary School and the Vineyard Primary School will expand in September.

Last year 8 per cent of Richmond’s primary school children failed to get a place at one of their preferred schools, compared with 9 per cent in 2012 and 11 per cent in 2011.

Richmond’s cabinet member for schools, Councillor Paul Hodgins, said the expansion strategy was ambitious but had momentum.

He said: “Not only is the council providing even more school places for children living in the borough, we are supporting the improvement of educational standards.

“Darell Primary School is rated by Ofsted as ‘good’, and is continuing to improve still further under a dynamic leadership team.

“That makes Darell the right place to invest in further, and I thank the governors and staff for working positively with us.

“The new facilities that expansion will bring will support the school in its journey to becoming a truly outstanding local school.”
