More people in the borough are seeking help to manage their debts, according to figures released by a charity.

StepChange Debt Charity said 1,002 people in Harrow contacted its helpline last year, compared to 700 calls in 2012.

The charity say on average people it speaks to are £76 short each month in covering the costs of household bills.

Mike O’Connor from the charity said: “Debt can have a devastating effect on people’s lives in the form of mental health issues and family breakdown.

“We need people to take early action to prevent some of the worst effects and get back on their financial feet much sooner.”

The information was released as part of the charity’s Debt Awareness Week and it aims to make people aware of the potential signs of debt problems.
