Independent retailers in Richmond have pledged to keep their doors shut to save money and reduce carbon dioxide levels.

Traders in Eton Street made the promise as Richmond becomes one of the first London boroughs to launch the Close the Door campaign.

Shops and restaurants lose 50 per cent of their heating through open doors and could reduce their carbon dioxide emissions by 10 tonnes each year by closing the door.

Councillor Pamela Fleming, cabinet member for environment, said: “The impact that something as simple as shutting a door can have on the world around us is quite amazing and by keeping doors closed, shops can help the environment and save themselves money.”

Businesses who sign up to the campaign, which has been supported by MPs Zac Goldsmith and Vince Cable, will receive free window stickers and door signs.
