A Kingston charity is under investigation for failing to file its accounts for more almost four years.

African Families Support Services is part of an inquiry by the Charity Commission into organisations with annual incomes between £250,000 and £500,000 that have failed to declare their finances for two years.

The charity, which supports people affected by AIDS and HIV, last posted an income of £409,844 in March 2010. As of last week, its 2011 accounts were officially 716 days overdue.

It is a criminal offence for charities with incomes of more than £10,000 to fail to file accounts.

John Azah, director of Kingston Race and Equalities Council, said: “They did a lot of good work at the time, I would say they were one of the most successful charities in Kingston when they were here.

“I was aware they had lost some contracts and funding, which is why I thought they slowed down.

“I wasn’t aware they were in trouble with their accounts.”

African Families Support Services’ last registered address was at Endeavour House in Cambridge Road, Norbiton. The charity manager is named as Sophie Kafeero.

A spokeswoman for Unit Management, which manages Endeavour House, said the organisation had not been registered at the premises since 2006.

None of the telephone numbers, websites or email addresses worked when the Surrey Comet tried to contact the charity.

However, Ms Kafeero and several trustees are now listed as members of a different charity, Community Development Organisation, which also works with African families affected by HIV and AIDS.

It is also registered at Endeavour House, and has filed accounts since 2011.
