A group of Weybridge air cadets enjoyed a visit from the Defence Secretary to mark the enrolment of their newest recruits.

Philip Hammond, MP for Weybridge and Runnymede, visited the 11F Brooklands squadron on Thursday, January 9, and helped with the formal enrolment of 14 new cadets.

The cadets recently finished their junior cadet training, covering the key skills of marching, how to wear uniform and learning about the air cadet organisation.

The completion allows youngsters to become full members, which allows them to take part in activities away from the squadron’s headquarters.

At the enrolment, each cadet makes the cadet promise in front of the squadron by pledging to serve their unit loyally and to be a good citizen and do their duty.

After their pledge, Mr Hammond presented each cadet with their record of service books and wished them luck in their career within the cadets.

Mr Hammond also spoke to cadets about their aspirations and watched a continuity drill, a marching display without any words of command.

Flight Lieutenant Fred Kerswill, the squadron’s commanding officer, said: “We are delighted that Mr Hammond could find time in his busy schedule to visit us.

“The cadets have been excited at the prospect of the visit and have worked hard at perfecting their drill display.”

Young people who join the air cadets gain experience flying, gliding and adventure training along with qualifications.
