Edmonton MP Andy Love donned a hard hat and luminous jacket today as he inspected the redevelopment of a housing estate.

Mr Love toured the construction site of the former Highmead estate in Fore Street and discussed the development, called Silverpoint, with Enfield councillors and Countryside Properties, who are in overseeing the work.

An existing 11-storey tower block, which contained 61 homes, was demolished in May last year.

Construction work then began in July and in the estate's place, the developer aims to provide 118 residential units, 22 of which will be homes, 96 will be apartments and of the total, 40 per cent will be affordable homes managed by Newlon Housing Trust.

Mr Love said: "They are building three to four-bedroom homes, which will be affordable and will be critical in this part of London."

As well as the homes, the new estate will have a 769 square metre health centre.

Mr Love added: "I'm very excited about that. It will be very central and will have all the professions not just GPs, on one site."

Retail space will also be provided with 1,037 square metres of space. Mahbub Khandoker, development manager, said: "It will be flexible space, and we actively marketing it to brands like the Co-op bank and to local retailers."

Enfield Borough Council will own a community centre on the site and there will be a children's play area.

It is hoped that the first units will go on sale in 2015.
