FAMILY members wept today (Jan 9) during the inquest into a Penge student's death - whose murder remains unsolved nearly three years on.

Samuel Guidera, a Greenwich University student, was stabbed and found collapsed in Bailey Place, around 200m from Penge East station, on February 12 2011. He later died.

But despite numerous appeals in the media from police and the family, his killers have never been brought to justice.

Beginning an emotional inquest in Croydon, south London coroner Dr Roy Palmer said, with the third anniversary of the 24-year-old's death looming, he wanted "to try and bring some sort of closure to the matter."

The student's mum and dad Sarah Guidera and Chris Guidera listened as the court heard how Samuel was brought to King's College Hospital in cardiac arrest and not breathing. He was pronounced dead 25 minutes later.

A post-mortem later showed the cause of death to be a stab wound to the heart.

Detective Inspector Cliff Haines from the Met Police's Homicide and Serious Crime Command told the inquest that his investigation was still live.

He explained: "We've had five suspects arrested during the inquiry but, to date, no charged have been forthcoming."

DI Haines said: "There are no witnesses, unfortunately, to the actual attack itself. There were some witnesses who heard an argument of some description."

The inquest heard how Mr Guidera  may have been robbed of his wallet, which was missing, by "one or more attackers" before he managed to dial 999 himself and call for help at 9.51pm.

DI Haines said the ttack had not been caught on CCTV, but the driver of a passing vehicle, who had since been traced, had seen two figures running from the scene.

Recording a verdict of unlawful killing, Dr Palmer told the family: "I can only express my hope that you do manage to find the perpetrators and bring them to justice."

Anyone with information on Mr Guidera's death is asked to call 020 8345 3734 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
