This Is Local London: The fire is estimated to have caused around £30,000 of damage at the block of flats in Mulgrave Road The fire is estimated to have caused around £30,000 of damage at the block of flats in Mulgrave Road

An investigation has been launched after fire caused £30,000 of damage to a block of flats.

The fire started in a bin store in the communal porch of a block of six flats at Glyndale Grange, Mulgrave Road, Sutton, in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Shortly after five in the morning, a female resident heard “cracking and banging”, saw the bin area was on fire and called firefighters.

No-one was injured as the occupants were evacuated through the rear windows of the ground floor flats.

Police are investigating the incident but are keeping an open mind as there is no evidence to suggest the fire was set deliberately.

The fire is estimated to have caused around £30,000 of damage to the bin cupboard and smoke damage to the ceiling, light fittings and plastics in the communal hallway.

If anybody has any information about how the fire may have started or saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area that morning, they are encouraged to contact Sutton Police station on 101 or the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
