More than 130 people who claimed compensation following the London riots in the summer of 2011 are yet to be paid, the Labour party has said.

The information obtained through a Freedom of Information request by shadow Home Office minister Steve Reed to the Met Police showed that 133 claims were still outstanding as of November 6 2013.

Of all claims, 16 per cent of the requested cash had been paid out to those affected by the violence and looting across the capital more than two years ago.

As of November 6 2013, claims totalling £229 million had been made under the Riot Damages Act 1886, and only £46.9 million (15.7 per cent) had been paid to claimants.

A spokesman for the Mayor's Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) said only
the most complex cases remain and "everyone who wasn't insured and made a valid claim has been paid, and over 96% of insured claims have been settled".

Virgo fashion store in Station Road, North Chingford was looted during the riots and it is understood compensation was paid to the business within 12 months of the 'smash and grab'.

Croydon North MP Mr Reed said: "With the eyes of the country on him, David Cameron promised the victims of the riots they would not be forgotten and would not be left out of pocket.

"It's disgraceful there are still residents and business owners in London facing financial hardship because they have received either too little compensation or nothing at all."
