FLOODING is predicted to hit the south east again tomorrow (Jan 3).

Wet and windy weather has caused misery across the UK over the past few weeks and the unsettled weather is expected to continue over the next 24 hours.

Floods are likely due to strong winds, large waves and high tides from the early hours on Friday, experts have warned.

The Thames Barrier has also been closed today to protect people and properties along the Thames.

The Environment Agency’s regional duty manager Julia Simpson said: “We strongly urge the public to stay away from the coastline during this period of unsettled weather.

“We especially ask people to stay away from coastal paths and promenades as these could be highly dangerous as there is an increased risk of being swept out to sea”.

The Environment Agency is monitoring the situation closely and working with the Met Office and local authorities to minimise damage.

Teams are currently ensuring flood defences are working effectively, monitoring sea levels and preparing to issue flood alerts and warnings.

An Environment Agency spokesman said: “People should check the Environment Agency website or follow @EnvAgencySE and #floodaware on Twitter for the latest flood outlook in the south east region, and sign up to receive free flood warnings, taking action when they receive them.”
