Leatherhead stables flood again
A stables where stranded ponies had to be rescued by the emergency services last week has flooded again today.
It comes after another flood warning was issued for the River Mole at Leatherhead and with more heavy rain predicted for tomorrow.
Natasha Bell, 40, of Epsom, who helps her sister-in-law Andrea Norbury run Thorncroft Stables, in Thorncroft Drive, Leatherhead, said the stables have been flooded again after the River Mole burst its banks - less than a week after the same thing happened on Christmas Eve.
A 22-year-old pony, called Rosebud but known as Bud Bud, went underwater four or five times in the first flood before a boatload of firefighters came to her rescue.
Speaking to the Epsom Guardian this afternoon, Ms Bell said: "The river has burst its banks again so the yard is flooded again.
"The animals had to be re-homed last week because the premises were flooded so it’s not as serious in terms of that, but we are all just absolutely gutted."
She said that the stables are not insured for the damage and the next task now will be to start clearing the debris which the flood has strewn across its fields.
Ms Bell added: "It’s been horrific. We are thankful to the kind neighbours and friends who have taken the animals in."
The Environment Agency issued a flood warning for the River Mole at Leatherhead again today.
It stated: "River levels are rising significantly throughout this morning in response to recent rainfall. We are expecting there to be some property flooding.
"There is no significant rainfall forecast for today but approximately 5mm is expected this evening. We will continue to monitor the river levels and will update this message as the situation changes."
The Met Office has forecast more heavy rain for the Epsom area tomorrow, particularly between 12pm and 3pm, with up to 40mph gusts. The wind will ease on Saturday, but rain is again expected.
