An elderly woman sustained head injuries when a tree fell onto a car yesterday, trapping her inside.

The emergency services were called to the incident, in Park Lane, Ashtead, at 12.15pm as the area was lashed by heavy rain.

Two ambulance crews an air ambulance team in a vehicle, and three fire engines, rushed to the scene.

The firemen freed the woman from the car and paramedics treated her for a head injury and back pain, before taking her to St George's Hospital in Tooting.

An Epsom firefighter said: "There were persons trapped under a tree which had fallen onto the car.

"An elderly woman was rescued and cut out by the brigade."

Both of Epsom’s fire pumps and one from Leatherhead attended the scene.
