New Year, new you? These are words often said on January 1, but a charity is challenging people to stay off alcohol for the first month of the year.

In the Alcohol Concern Campaign's Dry January, people are asked to sign up for 31 days away from their favourite tipples.

Enfield Borough Council is supporting the campaign to encourage Enfield people to make a healthy start to 2014.

The council's cabinet member for community wellbeing and public health, Councillor Christine Hamilton, said: "We're encouraging people to take part in the Dry January challenge to see if they can bin the booze for 31 days.

"It’s a light-hearted challenge which aims to get across the message that too much alcohol isn't good for you and many people would probably benefit from drinking less. I'm signing up and I'd urge as many residents as possible to take part as well and see if they can resist a tipple or two.”
