World-famous opera singer Katherine Jenkins led a list of seven Richmond people honoured in the 2014 New Year’s Honours list.

The 33-year-old Welsh singer, who lives in Mortlake, was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for her services to music and charitable services.

Also being made an OBE was chairman and founder member of young people’s charity Mosaic, Khawar Mann, from Barnes.

Fellow Barnes resident and former chief executive of the English National Opera, Loretta Tomasi, was also made an OBE for her services to opera.

She left the role at the end of the year for pastures new.

Music teacher Margaret Murray, from Ham, was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to music.

Richmond resident Jane Pritchard, curator of dance, theatre and dance performance at the Victoria and Albert Museum, was also made an MBE in the honours list.

Guy Clarke, from Twickenham, became an MBE for his services to conservation as higher officer at Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (Cites), Border Force and the Home Office.

Mortlake’s Bruce Houlder received the Companion of the Order of the Bath for services to defence, in particular the Armed Forces Justice.

Mr Houlder works as director of service prosecutions at the Ministry of Defence (MoD).

Katharine Jenkins really should not be described as an "opera singer". I don't think she has ever been in an opera. She sings operatic songs. I think she is a great artiste. Sorry, my pedantic side has come out!
