An Epsom fire commander has warned residents to be extra vigilant on New Years Eve as firefighters are set to hold another strike in a dispute over pensions.
Epsom’s watch commander Sean Tickner said today that members of the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) are due to strike tomorrow, from 6.30pm to 12.30pm.
He said: "We just want to warn the public to be a little more vigilant as we may not be there.
"We are still in negotiations with the Government about conditions of service and pensions. We’re in stalemate.
"The Government wants to shoot us down in flames. We already pay 14 per cent of our pay in pensions."
FBU members in Surrey and Kent chose not to strike, as planned, on Christmas Eve to be on hand to rescue people from flooding.
The union has an agreement with the fire services and Government that its firefighters can be recalled if a major incident occurs.
Private rescue firm Specialist Group International (SGI) is expected to provide trained crews to make up numbers during the strike.
