A schoolgirl has been dubbed a "hope for the future” at a national women’s awards.

Yasemin Necati, who goes to Woodhouse College, in North Finchley, won the title in the national 2013 Guardian Women Awards.

The 17-year-old, from Palmers Green, launched an online petition to get sex and relationship education updated in the UK curriculum - and it has already received 50,000 signatures.

She spent her last birthday trying to get Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg to admit change was needed by conducting a live radio debate with him.

She has also joined the committee of the No More Page 3 campaign, which is working to abolish photos of bare-breasted women from newspapers.

The No More page Three campaign visited Woodhouse College last week, and it has become the first sixth-form in England to actively back the campaign.

College principal John Rubinstein said: “We were very pleased to host the No More Page 3 Campaign, the students got really involved in discussion and debate.

“We are extremely proud of Yas and her award, she is a true campaigner and carries out all of this additional work in her spare time.

“We actively encourage campaigning, debate and discussion at Woodhouse. They may be teenagers but 16 to 18 year olds have a lot to add to political debate in this country. I think Yas is a shining example of that.”
