A crematorium has had to cancel funerals for two weeks after being flooded on Monday night.

Randall's Park Crematorium off Randalls Road, Leatherhead, was under two and a half feet of water on Tuesday after the nearby River Mole burst its banks.

Although its grounds are now accessible thanks to receeding floodwater, it has had to cancel all funeral services both this week and next.

It is offering bereaved families the chance to use its facilities in Crawley until it can reopen.

A spokesperson for Dignity plc, which runs the crematorium, said: "The river that runs through the grounds burst its banks during the night of 23/24 December and flooded the whole site including the chapel, offices and other buildings.

"There were no coffins on the premises at this time. Contractors were called to the crematorium on the morning of 24 December to pump out the water from all affected areas; to dehumidify all buildings and to begin carrying out repairs.

"By 27 December the flooding had receded and all of the grounds are now accessible to visitors. We have cancelled funeral services scheduled for 24 and 27 December and all services due to take place next week.

"However, we have given families and their funeral directors the option of having a service at Surrey & Sussex Crematorium in Crawley, which is also operated by Dignity and a distance of 30-40 minutes from Randall's Park."
