Swashbuckling primary school students raised £600 for a cancer support centre by becoming Pirates of the Caribbean in their end of year play. Pupils at St Martin’s CoE Junior School, in Worple Road, Epsom, raised the money for the Macmillan Butterfly Centre, a cancer information and support service based in Epsom Hospital, by holding collections at the end of the year six performance and through selling DVDs of the play.

Due to work currently being undertaken to permanently expand the school to enable it to take an extra class in reception from next September, this year's performance, Pirates of the Caribbean, was held at Epsom engineering firm Atkins.

To thank the organisation, the school donated all proceeds from the performance to the Macmillan Butterfly Centre, Atkins' chosen charity.

Bob Twells, headteacher, said: "We really appreciated Atkins stepping in to allow the show to go on for the year six performance. Every year, proceeds from the sale of the year six show DVD, as well as collections on the night, are donated to a local charity. We’re delighted this year to contribute to such a worthy cause and hope this contribution will allow the Macmillan Butterfly Centre to continue to help those affected by cancer in the local community."
