At least 120 trees are down over roads this morning in Surrey following last night's storm.

There are reports of a tree down and a three lorry pile up at the BP garage on the A217 at Kingswood, and another tree is partly blocking Temple Road, Epsom.

A large tree was blown down yesterday at Riverview Primary in West Ewell, beside the playground.

Some parts of Banstead have had no electricity since a power failure at 1am this morning. What's On in Banstead's Facebook Page says: "Morning folks, those in darkness due to power failure...

"I have just been on the phone to power network. Some of Tadworth has been in darkness since one. The problem had not been reported but since I rung they said something will be done within three hours."

A water main has burst in Langley Vale, Epsom. The water supply has been cut off and Thames Water is working on the problem.

Andrew Parkes, group managing editor at Newsquest South London, said when he turned off the M25 at junction 8 he found that the A217 was closed and his way was blocked.

Mr Parkes said: “I turned up a dark lane. I didn’t know which way I was going, I couldn’t see a thing and I didn’t know what to do.

“I was soon swerving round a dozen fallen trees and submerged areas. I had to drive round on the banks. There were a line of cars dodging and weaving and taking it in turns to go first.”

Mr Parkes said he managed to reach Chipstead and continued on through Banstead and Burgh Heath to the office in Sutton.

He said: “Going through the lanes this morning was quite something. It was a bit of a game.

“When I came into Banstead it was a bit higher up, they were all passable just about. I reckon a lot of people will not be able to get though because the A217 is closed.”

Deborah Gill of Beaufort Way, Epsom, said its residents are once again stranded by flood water with no access in or out of road and many elderly residents awaiting carers visits.

She said: "Epsom Council are not responsible for the drains they say - but they do have duty of care for the vulnerable in their community.

"Surrey County Council cannot take calls this morning - but this problem has been on going for years and the drains which apparently are damaged by tree roots have never been fixed."

Surrey County Council said teams are on standby to deal with the impact of last night's storm such as fallen trees across roads.

It has urged drivers and residents to keep updated on weather warnings, flood alerts and storm advice via its website and local travel updates via the Surrey Travel Twitter feed.

Train services are severely disrupted this morning but are expected to restart later when trees are cleared from the lines and the tracks checked.
