Budding fashion designers took inspiration from the men in their lives to put on a show in front of some of the industry’s experts.

Second year Middlesex University BA Fashion Design students showcased their designs in front of menswear designers, Agi and Sam.

Outfits were modelled by the students’ personal muses who ranged from family members to professional models such as Nik Thakkar, who has worked for Jean Paul Gaultier and Louis Vuitton.

Collections took inspiration from Japanese animation, 70s and 80s club wear, sci-fi, naval costume as well as Italian military.

The judging panel selected three winners, with student Sarah Holmes being awarded first place for her regatta themed designs.

Inspired by 60-year-old family friend, Nigel Panton, who enjoys rowing, her designs were a modern twist on the theme which included block colours and stripes.

Sarah, 20, created a jacket, shirt and trousers using materials including cord, mohair, felt, leather and cotton.

She said: “I was really shocked to have won, but it felt great.  My muse, Nigel, was also really happy with the pieces.  After graduating I hope to have my own political fashion brand, so I’m building on my experience.”

Along with Sarah, fashion student Olivia Overton picked up second place and Chloe Johnson was selected for third.
