Edmonton MP Andy Love calls for more social housing

This Is Local London: MP calls for more social housing MP calls for more social housing

An MP says there is a desperate need for more affordable housing after house prices in his constituency increased to more than ten times the average salary.

Edmonton MP Andy Love made his comments after figures from the National Housing Federation showed the average salary in the area is £20,634, while the average house price is 10.8 times greater at £223,398.

He said: “We are experiencing an affordable housing crisis – rents and property prices in the capital are going up but wages are staying the same.

“Meanwhile social housing is being sold off and not replaced at anywhere near the speed we need it to be.

“At nearly 11 times the average salary, house prices are completely out of reach for so many people in Edmonton, and private rents are unaffordable too.

“This means that more and more people every day are turning to the state for help, adding another £1.7 million to the very housing benefit bill that the Government is desperately trying to cut.”

Can someone please tell me where is the logic in Building more Social Housing only for it to be Sold off. I am all for building Social Housing but not for it to be Sold Off. Otherwise we are in a never ending spiral.

The Right to Buy council houses was a ludicrous decision. Those tenants who wanted to buy could have been given help to move out and buy privately but council houses should have remained for LOCAL residents who wanted to rent. We can't go back but future Social Housing (as we now have to call it) should not be allowed to be sold.

I could not agree more. the right too buy is one of the main problems, it should never have happened , we just can not keep on building these houses and then selling them off cheap, and so it goes on adinfinitum.

This is a bit rich from a snake like Andy Love. his party let 7 million people into the country and he is pro immigration look at the state of Edmonton.
more housing encourages more people lets start by trying to keep what we got open i.e. A&E lets find money for the things we need first and if immigrants can't buy houses in Andy Loves constituency they can go and live in the homes they own in their own countries of birth.
