Neighbours of schoolgirl who was killed after being hit by a car while she waited at a bus stop say they are in shock after the incident.

Lily-Rose Murphy, 11, of Samuel Close, was waiting at a bus stop in The Common, Stanmore, with her mother shortly after 12.20pm on Wednesday when a car mounted the pavement and collided with them.

The Bushey Academy pupil was pronounced dead at the scene, while her mother, 46, is currently in hospital in a critical condition.

Saleem Akhtar, 71, who lives near the family's home in Stanmore said: “It is such a shock to all of us round here.

“She was such a friendly, bubbly girl and she would always be out playing with the other kids and my grandchildren.

“It is such a shame for something like this to happen at this time of year.”

Khatera Azizi, who also lives nearby, said: "On the day it happened we saw a police car come into the close but we didn’t know what had happened.

“When I found out I was just horrified. It’s such a horrible thing to happen to such a nice girl.

“She was lovely and would always play with the other children. I just can't believe that sweet girl has gone.”

Floral tributes have been left at the scene of the incident and Lily-Rose’s headteacher Andrew Hemmings paid tribute to her saying she was a ‘popular and hardworking' student’.

The driver of the car, a 69-year-old woman, was cut from the vehicle and taken to hospital with minor injuries.
