THE friends group of Beckenham recreation ground are rallying support for the restoration of a historic bandstand.

The public are being asked for views and suggestions on how to raise the £90,000 needed to restore the bandstand to its former glory while also exploring the possibility of rebuilding the children’s paddling pool.

The bandstand was once host to famous former resident, David Bowie, in a 1969 music festival.

In September, a Bowie themed festival was held by the Friends group to raise awareness of the bandstand’s restoration.

Following the star’s footsteps, music lovers and enthusiasts were treated to a festival of music which saw audiences dressing as Bowie.

Group chairman Chris Phillips said "We are passionate about restoring the bandstand.

"We have already received national recognition for the campaign.

"Please take a few minutes to share your opinions about the proposals, helping us to secure the future of the park and its regeneration."

Executive Councillor for the environment, Colin Smith, said: "We are extremely supportive of what the Friends group are looking to achieve in Croydon Road Rec.

"I really would like to take this opportunity to thank them all for dedicating their free time to help improve the borough’s parks as they do."

"The extra inward funding they are able to attract continues to transform and improve parks and green spaces across the borough for the benefit of all."
