A symbolic flame brought all the way from Bethlehem will arrive in Epsom on Sunday as the centrepiece for a multi-faith peace service.
The Peace Light is kindled in the grotto where, according to tradition, Jesus was born and is then taken on a journey across Europe and America.
Started by an Austrian broadcaster, the initiative raises money for childrens' charities.
Although the light has been taken to churches in the borough since 2004, this is the first time there has been a civic ceremony which has been organised by scouts, churches, the Hindu community, the Baha’is and Epsom Council.
Scouts will bring the Peace Light into the marketplace at midday as Five Farthings Handbell Band plays Silent Night.
The Mayor of Epsom and the faith communities will welcome the light, a candle will be lit from the light and balloons released into the sky.
Reverend Sue Curtis, associate minister at Christ Church in Epsom Common, said: "We are delighted that members of the faith community of Epsom and Ewell are joining together to welcome the Peace Light from Bethlehem and stand together for peace at Christmas."
Neil Dallen, group scout leader of 7th Epsom (Methodist) Scout Group, said: " I hope that this will be the first of an annual event for the borough with the opportunity of the light, with its message of Peace, being taken on to many other places of worship."
