A film lover has spoken of her delight at the news that a new 600-seater cinema will be coming to Crouch End.

The Crouch End Picturehouse will open in renovated office buildings in Tottenham Lane, after it was given planning permission by Haringey Borough Council last week.

Kate Bentell, of Avenue Road, said a new cinema was a “brilliant idea”.

She said: “I love watching films and the new cinema is just what we need in the area.

“Right now you have to go all the way to either North Finchley or Muswell Hill to see a good show.”

The new picturehouse will bring back a cinema to the site for the first time in more than a century and will create around 80 jobs.

The office buildings in Tottenham Lane will be transformed into a cinema with four screens and a total of 590 seats, with a first-floor bar and cafe and spaces available for community hire.

In May, the authority also approved plans for a new arthouse cinema, which is due to open in the new year.

Councillor Joseph Ejiofor, cabinet member for planning, said: “We’re determined to support sustainable developments that regenerate our town centres and provide new jobs for local people.

“These new independent cinemas honour Crouch End’s history as a home to the arts and encourage more visitors – boosting local traders and supporting our high streets.”
