Police and council officers tackled drivers and cyclists on the borough’s roads as part of a joint operation.

Elmbridge Council and Surrey Police joined forces to take on issues raised by residents through the community safety survey and neighbourhood policing panels.

The week-long operation, which started on November 25, saw 28 drivers stopped for speeding at locations including Station Avenue, Rydens Road, Ashley Road, Hurst Road and Portsmouth Road.

As well as this, 32 cyclists were caught riding on pavements, eight people were dealt with for jumping red lights, 15 for not wearing seatbelts and 26 for using a mobile phone while driving.

Police also seized a vehicle for not having insurance.

Councillor Christine Cross, portfolio holder for community development, said: “While all of these issues are dealt with on a regular basis by individual agencies the week meant Elmbridge Council and Surrey Police were able to target joint resources to achieve a greater effectiveness.

“The week was a great success and we hope to be able undertake more of this joint work in the future.”

David Hollingsworth, outgoing neighbourhood inspector for Elmbridge, urged people to raise issues or concerns at their local neighbourhood police panel.
