An ex-councillor accused of defrauding a charity is due to appear in court today.

Geoff Hammond, formerly a Labour councillor representing the Higham Hill ward in Walthamstow, resigned last month when police launched an investigation.

The 50-year-old, from Sollershott East in Letchworth Garden City, Hertfordshire, attended Charing Cross police station on September 17, when he was arrested.

He was then bailed until late November, when the charge was brought against him.

The alleged fraud of an unnamed charity occurred between May 2012 and July 2013.

He is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court today.
