Soused clubbers could go hungry on New Year’s Day thanks to Kingston Council.

Members of the council's licensing sub-committee have turned down applications from popular late-night takeaways Eden Kebab and Chic-o-Land to stay open longer on January 1.

Both stores had asked to extend their opening hours until 5am in order to cater for hungry revelers celebrating the New Year.

But councillors refused the applications, agreeing with the Metropolitan Police's submission that officers were already overstretched on New Year's Eve and late night food outlets stopped people going home quickly.

Both stores will close at the normal time of 3.30am.

The decision received mixed reviews from councillors sitting in the public gallery.

Conservative councillor Andrea Craig supported the committee, and tweeted: "Tough stance but the right call!"

But Liberal Democrat councillor Barry O'Mahony tweeted: "Cttee refused New Year's Eve extra hour for Eden Kebab so u can drink later but not eat! Don't get the Logic?"
