Pupils at Surbiton High School will move into new classrooms.
The school has bought the four-storey Zockoll House building in Maple Road and plans to convert part of it for teaching use.
Administrative staff will also move into the converted town house, which backs on to the school’s existing Surbiton Crescent site.
Principal Ann Haydon said: “As we develop the school further we need more room for our pupils.
“It is not in response to anything from lack of places in Kingston.
“There will need to be some internal refurbishment.
“It is huge. The configuration is very much offices. We think they can easily be converted.
“Obviously if other options come up we would be looking at them.”
