Archaeologists were left dumbfounded in August when they unearthed a “mysterious” bunker in a school playing field.

Hendon and District Archaeological Society uncovered the reinforced concrete structure while excavating at Martin Primary School in Plane Tree Walk, East Finchley.

The find was made as they helped children dig the field during the school’s centenary celebrations.

The group could not find records of the network of tunnels in any maps or documents.

Later that month The Bohemia pub in North Finchley closed its doors for good. Gregarious Ltd, who managed the venue, revealed the closure came as a result of failed lease negotiations with the owner.

And in Brunswick Park, neighbours were left horrified after two men in their 30s were stabbed in a brawl.

The victims suffered knife wounds to the chest during the fight at the junction of East Crescent and Beaconsfield Road.

Pinakin Barot, of East Crescent, arrived home 15 minutes before the drama unfolded just yards from his doorstep. He said: “It is crazy, this is usually a very peaceful street.”

In other news, MPs and councillors vowed to keep a close eye on an accident and emergency department after it was rated one of the worst in the country by patients.

Barnet Hospital’s casualty unit received a rating of 15 out of 100 in the Friends and Family survey, ranking it 192 out of 200 for patient satisfaction.

Barnet and Chase Farm Hospitals NHS Trust interim chief executive director Dr Tim Peachey said the trust had received “useful feedback” which they would use to make “positive changes at ward level right up to hospital level”.

And August was the month when the Times Series was banned from attending matches at The Hive by Barnet Football Club – for 20 hours.

Less than a full 24 hours of being informed of the decision by the club’s press officer Oscar Chamberlain, the paper was told told the ban had been lifted.

The ban had been imposed after the club’s HR manager Steve Barron emailed the newsdesk claiming the football club’s solicitors would be taking action following and earlier article revealing staff had been deducted money from their wages because of possible problems with a new clocking in machine.
