GREENWICH is chomping at the bit ahead of its “fantastically silly” annual pantomime horse race for hospice charity Demelza.

Steeds and celebrities are set to gallop for the event on December 22 which last year saw the likes of Bill Bailey and Jools Holland prepared to horse around for the cause.

Comedian Harry Hill has thrown his support behind this year’s event, as well as other celebs including Jamie Oliver and Arthur Smith, with Cheryl Baker appearing at the ceremony and tribute acts Freddie Mercury and The Counterfeit Beatles performing.

Costumed competitors and The King's Troop will take part in a pre-race ceremony at 11am at Devonport House with the race kicking off at 1pm from King William Walk, followed by an after party at the Greenwich Tavern from 3pm.

Event organiser and satirist Mark Biddiss said: “The fantastically silly race is very much a must-see event.

“Namely for the absurd sight of galloping pantomime horses, along with people dressed up as various fruit and vegetables.

“I was keen to support Demelza after seeing the brilliant care they provide to children and young people with life-limited and life-threatening conditions in South East London, Kent and East Sussex.”
