A MAN in Sidcup reportedly stabbed himself with a kitchen knife he stole from a pound shop this afternoon.

Police were called to reports of a stabbing at just after 3pm and officers cordoned off an area behind Sidcup library in Hadlow Road, near the High Street.

Ambulances and police cars arrived at the scene and an air ambulance took off at around 4.20pm by The Green nearby carrying a man reportedly in his 20s.

Staff at the 99p Store in the High Street said a tall man in a long raincoat came in and tried to buy a pack of four kitchen knives.

He reportedly typed an incorrect pin number into the card machine before walking out quickly without paying. 

Supervisor Thayaliny Kandeepan, 22, said: “The card didn’t work but he started walking out anyway.

“My manager told him to stop but he didn’t so my manager called the police.”

Rita Matiscsak was behind the counter when the mixed race man allegedly made off without paying for the knives.

She told News Shopper: “He was not running but he moved fast.

“I was not afraid but when you see somebody like that the feeling is not good.”

A Bexley police spokesman said the stabbing was not being treated as suspicious.

Officers did receive a report of a theft from a shop near the scene.
