A chef who cooks meals for elderly people at a residential home in West Molesey was handed an award at the regional finals of the Great British Care Awards.
Hilary May, 50, who works at Thameside care home, Beldham Gardens, was given the nutrition and hydration award in the London regional finals and will go forward to the national awards next year.
Ms May heads up the care home kitchen, with her particular expertise in creating nutritious food for people on restricted diets or for those who have problems swallowing and need their food to be pureed or in smaller pieces.
Ms May said: “The award came as a total shock. I didn’t even know I’d been nominated. The award ceremony was amazing. However, I cannot stress enough that I could not do my job without my team, I could not hope to work with a better group of people.”
The awards are supported by the Department of Health and celebrate excellence in social care, paying tribute to those who work in the sector across the country.
The national awards will take place in spring 2014.
