New Malden primary schoolchildren are looking after chickens, collecting their eggs and boiled them to eat.

They have also grown fruit and vegetables in school allotments, helping them to win a bronze healthy lifestyle award.

Burlington Junior School pupils became the first in the borough to get the Healthy Schools London Bronze Award.

It is part of the Mayor of London's initiative to improve young people's health and wellbeing.

The school in Burlington Road was handed its prize in a ceremony at the Guildhall this month where the Healthy Schools Kingston programme was launched.

More than 20 schools in the borough have now signed up.

Headteacher Pip Utting said: “The children have enjoyed taking part in a variety of projects to help them learn about the importance of healthy lifestyles.

"We’re looking forward to working towards the Silver Award.”

Leader of Kingston Council Councillor Liz Green said: "I’m extremely proud of the work at Burlington Junior School. I’m sure this is just one of many awards our schools will win over the coming years.”

Schools can earn money for awards with up to £700 up for grabs.
