Unemployment continues to fall as 400 people found work in the last month in Croydon.

The borough is one of the top three in London for falling numbers of unemployed, down 5% from September and 24% since last year.

Youth unemployment is also down 36% since last year.

A total of 16,000 new jobs are being created in the borough over the next five years.

Pathways to Employment, a Croydon initiative to get people into work, is ensuring new jobs go to local people.

Recently they recruited 320 jobs for local people at the new Morrisons supermarket in Purley Way.

Only Bromley and Havering have done better with falling unemployment rates.

Last week, leaders from Croydon’s public, business and voluntary sectors joined forces for the sixth meeting of the Croydon Congress, part of Croydon Business Month.

Councillor Vidhi Mohan, cabinet member for communities and economic development, said: “These figures are deeply encouraging. What is also especially pleasing is that more than 100 young people have found work in the last month.

“However this is only the beginning. Our Pathways to Employment initiative aims to create thousands of jobs in Croydon over the next few years, and help to continue this downward trend.”
