Police are investigating after a number of diesel barrels were discovered in what is believed to be a stolen car.

Officers responded to a sighting of a possible stolen Nissain Prairie in Thames Ditton at about 11.43am today and chased the car until it collided with their vehicle and a wall in Station Road.

Following the collision, police found a quantity of diesel barrels in the car.

Station Road was closed while emergency services dealt with the diesel and made the scene safe. The road has now re-opened

A man has been arrested and police are currently investigating the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

Residents posted on Twitter that a police helicopter had been circling overhead.

Christine Thompson posted on Facebook: “Car crash in the village - Station Road between the George & Dragon and Basing Way. Best to avoid that area - it looked pretty bad from where I was standing, but the Police told me not to come any closer so I'm hoping no one was seriously hurt.”

Mark Russell, who works at Knight James wealth management, said he heard a screech of tyres followed by a big bang.

He said: "Police closed the road about half an hour ago after a car went into a wall. There are lots of police and the helicopter has been out. Now they are trying to get the car away.

"There are three or four police cars and a fire engine out there"

Davina Kaur, manager of La Clinique, described the car as a "grey or silver saloon".
