A Rotary Club has thanked the readers of the Harrow Times for their donations to memory boxes to help those suffering with Alzheimer’s.

The Rotary Club of Northwick Park has been collecting items from the past on behalf of the Alzheimer's Society Harrow and Hillingdon branch.

With the help of the Harrow Times, the club has managed to gather together the items from the last century to help people with the condition to bring back memories from long ago.

Donations flooded in after the paper reported on the club's campaign in August.

Eric Silver from the Rotary Club said: “We really want to thank all the readers of the Harrow Times for their generous donations.

“These boxes will hopefully make a difference to people in and around Harrow suffering Alzheimer's and dementia, and bring back memories from their past.

Items collected included old coins, ration books, old newspapers, knitting patterns, shaving brushes, seaside postcards and an old telephone, all from the 1940s onwards.

Sue O’Brien, centre manager of Alzheimer’s Society’s Harrow Branch said: “We’re very grateful to the Rotary Club for their help and giving these boxes.

“They will be really valuable to our group sessions and they help us engage with people with Alzheimer’s.”

Dick Nathan, district governor of Rotary in London, said: “This is such an important initiative and is one of the many ways the Rotary Club aims to help the local community.

“We hope theses boxes will be a benefit to the society and they people they support.”

The boxes helps people with the condition remember long term memories, which in turn helps their short-term memory.
