A former countryside warden whose studies have taken in traditional farming in the Czech Republic and sustainable forestry in Malawi, Africa, has been appointed to a key post with the Gatwick Greenspace Partnership (GGP).

Tom Simpson has been given the post of Assistant People and Wildlife Officer with the charity, which works to benefit people, wildlife and the countryside covering the area between Horsham, Crawley, Horley, Reigate and Dorking.

In his new role for GGP, which is managed by Sussex Wildlife Trust, Tom will be encouraging Gatwick Airport staff to join his voluntary outdoor work parties, increasing biodiversity in the green conservation areas around the airport.

An important task is clearing scrub to let sunlight reach the nectar-rich flowers which will attract a variety of insects and other wildlife. Tom is also hoping to teach traditional countryside techniques such as hedge laying, dry stone walling and hurdle making.

Passionate about nature and conservation, Tom's interests include beekeeping, green woodworking and chainsaw carving.

Motivated by his grandfather to raise funds for charity, he recently completed a sponsored cycle to Berlin, where he then ran a marathon. Most recently, he worked as a countryside warden for Horsham District Council. Tom will be based at Tilgate Park in Crawley.

GGP is supported by all the local councils and Gatwick Airport, and is managed by the Sussex Wildlife Trust.
