Public urged to cancel amateur firework displays
London Fire Brigade has called on people to cancel firework displays due to take place this evening as firefighters are set to go on strike.
Crews are set to take industrial action tonight from 6pm to 11pm over government changes to pensions and raising their retirement age to 60.
The strike coincides with one of the busiest nights of the year for the fire service, with action taking place on the Friday before Guy Fawkes night, the weekend of Diwali and half term.
London Fire Commissioner Ron Dobson said: “Fireworks cause serious fires each year and bonfires can quickly get out of control which is why we’re urging people to attend organised displays on Strike Friday.
“During the strike we will have a contingency fire and rescue service of 27 fire engines, crewed by temporary firefighters.
“Serious emergencies will be attended, but smaller incidents won’t so we are calling on the public not to put themselves at risk by lighting fireworks and bonfires.”
