Painting by creative Sunnybank member auctioned for nearly £1,000
A cash-strapped charity which won National Lottery funding this month has raised almost £1,000 by auctioning a painting by one of its volunteers.
On Monday the colourful work by a member of The Sunnybank Trust's Kites social club, was sold in an online auction for £995.
The charity is pulling out all the stops to raise £106,000 in match funding so it can collect the £288,000 offered by the Big Lottery’s Reaching Communities Programme allowing it to help 150 more people with learning disabilities in the Epsom area over the next five years.
The Sunnybank Trust's members are brushing up on their present-wrapping skills
In the Spring, the Epsom Guardian launched the Shine On appeal to raise £75,000 after its funding from trusts dried up due to the recession.
Dorothy Watson, leader of the Kites club, a weekly social club at St Barnabas Church, in Temple Road, Epsom, said the total raised through the appeal so far stands at £13,039.
She said: "In the last few days several shops and businesses have called us to support the charity next year because they have been reading about us in the paper so there is an additional benefit that is not measurable at the moment."
The charity is currently holding workshops to prepare its members for 17 gift-wrapping sessions they will be offering in The Ashley Centre in the run-up to Christmas.
A number of Christmas concerts will be raising money for The Sunnybank Trust, including the Epsom Choral Society's concert at St Martin's Parish Church, in Epsom, on December 21. Tickets are available by calling 01372 727078 or visiting www.epsomchoral.org.uk
And the charity will be offering face-painting at Epsom's Christmas lights switch-on in the marketplace on November 21.
It is also now recruiting for the three new National Lottery-funded posts which will help the charity to expand. If you think you have got what it takes to be an advocate, assistant manager of the Kites club or a friendship scheme manager, visit www.sunnybanktrust.org
