A food market in Finchley has shut down, organisers have announced.

Cindy Robert and Beulah Antonin launched North London Artisan Market in March, encouraging local traders to sell their goods every other Saturday at Avenue House in East End Road.

Between ten and 20 traders would turn out to sell a variety of fresh produce from meat and fish to fruit and vegetables.

Speaking to the Times Series Miss Robert, who was born in France, said: “I used to go out every Friday or Saturday to buy my food from a market and so I wanted to recreate that here. We wanted to create a community feeling, a place you go to every week.

“It’s really sad for us to come to the decision for the market not to take place again. At least we can say we tried. It was a great project but unfortunately it’s not viable anymore. Unfortunately we never really had a big enough footfall.”

Miss Robert, who runs a French and Japanese patisserie in Finchley called Petit Gateau, thinks several factors including the economic climate and colder weather are to blame for the market’s downfall.

She said: “People also complained we should have held it on Sundays instead of Saturdays –but you can’t please everyone.

“I would really like to thank all of those customers and traders who supported us from the start and visited the market on a regular basis.”
