Diwali celebrations get underway in Barnet
Barnet Asian Women’s Association celebrated the coming of Diwali with song and dance.
The Mayor of Barnet, Councillor Melvin Cohen, joined guests including MP Theresa Villiers at at event in Friary Park marking the festival of light.
Association staff and service users performed a traditional song and gharba dance before joining in prayer before the festival of lights on Sunday, November 3.
Ms Villiers said: “It was an honour to attend this event, which marked an early start to the Diwali season. The Barnet Asian Women’s Association does excellent work in the community and clearly all the guests enjoyed the party very much.
“I would like to wish my Hindu constituents and their families a happy and prosperous Diwali."
Barnet Asian Women’s Association runs three community projects including a day care centre for elderly people, a domestic violence programme and a mental health programme.
