Gold medallist Laura Turner opens girls youth club
A Commonwealth gold medallist helped open the borough’s first girls-only youth club.
Laura Turner, 100m relay gold medallist at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, officially opened the new club at Cedars Youth and Community Centre in Harrow Weald last night.
Over the coming months the centre, which has been running for 18 months, will be organising activities including sports, hair and beauty lessons, cooking workshops and film nights.
Youth worker Natascia Bernardi, who set up the club, said: “Laura was great and she stayed later than she needed to and met with some of the girls which we really appreciate.
“We have a lot of lads turn up to the youth club here and girls would come along but not stay for very long.
“We asked them what they would like here and they said they wanted a girls only youth club.
“It is important girls in the borough have somewhere to go just for themselves where they feel safe and secure.”
