POUNDLAND could be the latest big name chain to arrive in Marlow.

Bosses at Poundland confirmed they are looking for a suitable premise, while  Domino's plan to move into West Street has now been approved.

Poundland Chief Executive Jim McCarthy wrote to Marlow Free Press columnist Michael Eagleton after he spoke positively about the store on his Marlow FM show.

Mr McCarthy said in an email: "We would love a store in Marlow.

"We are working closely with property agents covering Marlow to identify a site large enough to accommodate us.

"In the meantime the good folk of Marlow will be able to visit our new High Wycombe store, which opens before Christmas.

"Normally we like 5,000sq ft of shop floor selling space and storage of 1,500 sq ft."

Poundland had told the Free Press there were no plans to set up a store in Marlow but has now confirmed it is examining potential premises.

Poundland spokesman Sally Crompton said: "Poundland's property team are looking in to the possibilities of a site in Marlow, however nothing is confirmed at this stage.

"There are no plans this financial year to open a Poundland in Marlow."

Independent trader Martina Hunt, owner of artisan grocer Gather and Hunt, was not pleased at the prospect of two more big national chains arriving.

She said: "It will just start looking like any other High Street. Marlow is such a beautiful town with such a charm to it but if you make it the same as anywhere else its not as interesting to visit.

"If you get one pound shop you tend to get three pound shops and it can bring down the town."

She said customers from Maidenhead had expressed dissatisfaction of the number of pound shops in their town.

Mr Eagleton said there are too many coffee shops and boutiques in Marlow.

He said:"In other towns I have become a big fan of these £1 and 99p shops, but especially Poundland, that I think is a cut above the others.

"I would be first in the queue if one opened in Marlow, but I bet a few folks would disapprove."
