Downham man 'beat three-year-old nephew to death for wetting the bed'
A DOWNHAM man beat his three-year-old nephew to death for wetting the bed, a court has heard.
Ben Igbinedion, 43, is accused of murdering Daniel Evbuomwan at the defendant's home in Darent House, Brangbourne Road.
The toddler died of internal bleeding on March 2 at University Hospital, Lewisham.
His pelvis was shattered and several ribs were broken.
According to prosecuting counsel Richard Whittam QC, another child, also staying in the house, heard Igbinedion shouting at Daniel the previous night.
He told the Old Bailey: "She heard him crying and heard the defendant say 'why have you wet the bed?'"
When the girl tried to wake Daniel the next day, he didn't respond.
Mr Whittam said: "Daniel rolled over onto the floor. She saw him lying on the bedroom floor on his back with his eyes closed."
He added: "An ambulance was called and arrived. Shortly after he was taken to hospital.
"All efforts were made to help him. Resuscitation failed and he was pronounced dead at 11.35am.
"He had been subjected to serious trauma. The injuries were the kind he might have got in a road traffic accident."
Igbinedion was arrested on March 5.
Mr Whittam said: "He accepted Daniel was fine when he went to bed. He cannot explain the injuries.
"There is only one person who could have inflicted the injuries on Daniel and that is the defendant, but because of the enormity he cannot bring himself to accept what he has done."
Igbinedion denies murder.
The trial continues.
