International architects who led the award-winning redevelopments of King’s Cross Station and the Camden Roundhouse plan to set up shop in Tottenham and offer work placements and training in the area.

John McAslan + Partners will open N17 Design Studio in a currently disused shop in Tottenham High Road.

The 12-month pilot project will be run in partnership with Haringey Council and the College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London to give students the chance to learn key skills in apprenticeships.

Chairman of John McAslan + Partners John McAslan joined council leader Claire Kober and interim college principal and chief executive Jane O’Neill in the High Road this morning to meet some of the students that will benefit from the studio.

Mr McAslan said: “The new design studio will help generate employment and regeneration, creating a forum in Tottenham for the education and future of young people through structured apprenticeships.”

Ms O’Neill said: “By offering essential training and excellent opportunities for work experience, together we will raise Tottenham’s profile throughout London as a highly desirable location in which to study, work and live.”

The council will take a five-year lease on the building and refurbish it to create a space where the area’s regeneration plans can be showcased.

More than £1billion of investment has been secured to support the long-term regeneration of Tottenham, with construction work already underway to bring 10,000 new homes by 2025.

Cllr Kober said: “It’s fantastic to be welcoming McAslan to Tottenham. Their enthusiasm for the area is testament to its potential to be one of London’s centres for creativity, quality and opportunity.

“Equipping our young people with the skills they need to fulfil their potential is at the centre of our regeneration plans for Tottenham, and this studio will help raise aspirations as much as transform an empty building.

“Creating new business spaces will help us secure a revitalised High Road that supports our long-term ambition that everyone in Tottenham has the opportunity to succeed and thrive.”
