Film star Samantha Bond braved wind and rain to join in celebrations to open the revamped Hampton Square.

The St Margarets resident, famed for her role as James Bond’s Miss Moneypenny and more recently in Downton Abbey, cut the ribbon to officially open the new £800,000 community square.

The square, between Sainsbury’s and the Hampton Youth Project, includes an illuminated water feature, seating, landscaping and space for community activities.

It was redeveloped as part of Richmond Council’s uplift programme and was opened on Sunday, October 13, with a day of events for residents.

Councillor Pamela Fleming cabinet member for environment said: “Even though the weather was horrible, it was so pleasing to see so many people attend the opening.

“There was a real community spirit and I am so pleased that these improvements have created a wonderful new area for community activities that will be beneficial for many years to come.

“This area has been unloved for so long so I am thrilled that as part of the council’s uplift work residents now have a village square they can be proud of and will give the community a heart.”
